THE CATHARES CASTLES
Peyrepertuse Castle is accessible on foot by joining the GR35 Located at an altitude of 800m, the extent of its remains and the quality of its constructions make this castle the most important and the most remarkable example of military architecture of the Middle Ages of Languedoc. This fort dates from the first century BC when it was occupied by the Romans. As a result of local rivalries and the decadence of royal authority, the "Peyrepertuse Country" slipped imperceptibly under the northern border of the mighty Kingdom of Aragon. Peyrepertuse became a French stronghold in November 1240. Louis IX erected a formidable bastion of the southern border of the kingdom of France that confirmed in 1258 the Treaty of Corbeil.
